Why teams switch
Flat, predictable pricing
CheckFast publishes $9/$29/$79 subscriptions without per-host billing; monitor quotas and API request limits still apply.
External-only on purpose
No host agents are required, and CheckFast does not ingest application logs, traces or host metrics. Configure only the external targets you want checked.
Sign up and ship
CheckFast is self-serve and agentless. Create the required external monitors directly without installing host instrumentation.
When Datadog is overkill
Datadog is one of the strongest observability platforms ever built. APM with auto-instrumentation, log streams indexed at terabyte scale, real-user monitoring, security signals, infrastructure dashboards — the depth is genuinely impressive, and for big-stack production engineering organisations there is no real substitute. We are not pretending otherwise. This page is for teams who are using a small slice of Datadog and paying for the whole platform.
The slice we hear about most often is external synthetic checks plus alerting: a handful of HTTPS pings, an SSL expiry monitor, a status page, maybe a cron heartbeat. That is the entire Datadog footprint for many product teams. Synthetic Browser Tests start at roughly $12 per 1,000 runs, API tests at $5 per 10,000, on top of the ~$15/host infrastructure baseline. By the time you have 5 hosts, multi-region synthetics every minute, and SLO dashboards, the bill is several hundred dollars per month.
CheckFast does that subset for $9/mo on the Starter plan and $29/mo on Pro. We run external HTTP/HTTPS uptime checks, validate certificates, score security headers, parse SPF/DKIM/DMARC, ping cron jobs, and fan alerts out to Telegram, Slack, email, and webhooks. We do not pretend to do tracing, logging, or host metrics — and that is the whole pitch. Predictable flat pricing, agentless setup, the boring external-check work done well.
What Datadog does that CheckFast does not
APM with auto-instrumentation across Python, Node, Go, Java, Ruby and a dozen other runtimes. Log ingestion with structured search and live-tail. RUM with session replays. Continuous profiling. Network performance monitoring. Infrastructure agents that emit hundreds of metrics per host. Security and compliance signals. Watchdog AI for anomaly detection. CI Visibility and Test Optimization. Cloud SIEM. None of that is in CheckFast and we are not planning to build any of it. If you genuinely need two of those features, Datadog is the right tool and the bill is the cost of doing business.
What CheckFast does that Datadog does not (out of the box)
Email deliverability scoring across SPF, DKIM, DMARC, BIMI, MTA-STS, TLS-RPT and DNSSEC, all in one report. Single-page SEO snapshots with Lighthouse lab metrics. Public report URLs for compliance evidence. Telegram alerts on the entry tier — Datadog notification routing to Telegram requires either a webhook integration or a third-party bridge. A single-page audit at /check runs nineteen dimensions in parallel and renders a shareable verdict.
The honest recommendation
If your team has a Datadog seat already and synthetic checks are a tiny line item, do not migrate. If you are evaluating Datadog purely for synthetics, SSL expiry, and a status page, save the money and start on CheckFast Starter at $9/mo. If you are running both, point CheckFast at the public-facing URLs and keep Datadog for the deep stack — they coexist independently, and CheckFast acts as a second-opinion external watchdog.
FAQ
Is CheckFast really an alternative to Datadog?+
Only for the site-health subset of what Datadog does. Datadog ingests metrics, traces, logs, and live host telemetry from agents on your infrastructure. CheckFast does external black-box checks — uptime, SSL, email deliverability, page speed, cron heartbeats, DNS. If you need APM, log aggregation, or container telemetry, stay on Datadog. If your team is paying $200+/host for synthetics they barely use, switch the synthetics line item to CheckFast.
Does CheckFast replace Datadog Synthetics?+
For HTTP/HTTPS checks, SSL expiry monitoring, page speed, and broken-link sweeps — yes. We don't (yet) record multi-step browser transactions the way Datadog Synthetic Browser Tests do. If your synthetics are mostly home-page pings and SSL alerts, CheckFast handles that for the price of one Datadog host.
Pricing comparison?+
Datadog Synthetics is roughly $5 per 10k API tests + $12 per 1k browser tests, with infrastructure starting at ~$15/host/mo. A small team easily clears $300-500/mo. CheckFast is $9/mo (Starter), $29/mo (Pro), $79/mo (Agency) — flat. We don't bill per host or per test.
What about logs, traces, and metrics?+
CheckFast has none of those. It is, on purpose, a tightly scoped external-check tool — not a full observability platform. If you do need traces and logs, run both: keep Datadog for the deep stack, use CheckFast as the always-on external watchdog that doesn't need agents.
Can I keep Datadog and add CheckFast?+
That's the most common pattern. Teams keep Datadog for APM/logs/metrics and use CheckFast as the lightweight external probe + status page + on-call alerter for cron jobs and SSL certs — the things Datadog charges extra for.
Do you have an agent or SDK?+
No agent. CheckFast performs external URL, certificate and DNS checks without installing host instrumentation or ingesting application logs and traces.
